Tributes

It is with heavy hearts but also with joy that we announce the death of Seluda Joyner Johnson. Seluda died at her home surrounded by her family on January 17, 2025. She lived 85 wonderful years. Seluda Jane Joyner was born in Rocky Mount, NC to Elijah and Mary Land Joyner. Seluda was married to Edward Page Johnson for 34 years until he died in 1993. Seluda worked as the church secretary at the Cheraw First Presbyterian Church and then at Palmetto Brick Plant, two jobs that she thoroughly enjoyed. She enjoyed her special bridge club with whom she shared many fond trips and memories. She was a longtime member of St David’s Episcopal Church in Cheraw, SC and later moved to Summerton where she shared fond memories of Santee with her special friend, Dick Nall. Remaining to cherish her memory are her daughters, Elizabeth Johnson Morphis (Jamie ) of Hartsville, SC and Mary Anne Johnson Spivey (Scott ) of Simpsonville, SC. She has four wonderful grandchildren whom she dearly loved; Edward Page Spivey of Simpsonville, SC. Will McDowell Spivey of Columbia,SC, Jessie Seluda Morphis of Hartsville, SC and Isobel McNair Morphis of Hartsville, SC. She has many nieces and nephews, including her special nephew, Chris Brown. Preceding Seluda in death was her husband Edward Johnson, her parents William Elisha and Mary Land Joyner. She was the baby of twelve children who all preceded her in death, Dorothy Pansy (Bud) Pearce, William Crystal Joyner, Nannie Hazel (Howard) Pate, Ralph Ray Joyner, Roger Floyd Joyner , William Ray Joyner, Baby Boy Joyner, Christine Land Joyner, Sylvia Mae (William) Bryant, Mary Frances (Albert) Brown., William Elisha (Florine)Joyner. Her nephews, Lee Pearce, George Pearce, Ronald Pate, Grady Brown, Ray Brown and her great nephew Tyler Brown. She also shared a special bond with the ladies that took exceptional care of her this past year. We had a great group of caregivers and we are also very grateful to Crescent Hospice team, as wll. A casual visitation will be held at the home of Dr. James O. Morphis 1002 Fourteenth Street Hartsville, SC from 5:30-7 on Sunday Jan 19, 2025. The funeral service will be held at St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church at 11 am on Monday January 20th officiated by Father Bill Oldland. A burial service will be held at Pine View Cemetery in Rocky Mount, NC at 3 pm on January 20th following the service. Flowers may be sent to 1002 Fourteenth St., Hartsville, SC 29550 or memorials made to St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church of Hartsville, SC.
