Mr. Richard Houser "Dick" Yount

A memorial service for Mr. Richard Houser "Dick" Yount, 87, who entered into rest on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, will be conducted at 4 o'clock on Saturday, December 16, 2017, from St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carl Hunsucker and The Rev. Gene Feagin will officiate with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 302 Dunlap Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Richard Houser Yount of Hartsville, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at the age of 87. Dick was born in Hickory, North Carolina, on April 4, 1930, to the late Dallas Lee Yount and Mary Emma (Houser) Yount, the youngest of 5 siblings. He graduated from Hickory High School and then went on to attend Lenoir-Rhyne College. His college career was interrupted in the early 1950’s by service in the Army, as a Military Policeman at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. After an honorable discharge, he completed his college education, graduating from North Carolina State University with a degree in civil engineering in 1957. He remained a constant Wolfpack fan his entire life. Dick worked his entire career of 41 years as a civil engineer for Sonoco Products Company, both in Hartsville and in Atlanta, Georgia. He also completed projects on the side through the years as a licensed surveyor. His work at Sonoco sent him for several years to Venezuela, South America, and began a lifelong love of travel and appreciation for different cultures. Dick was an active and involved member of the community and participated in several civic organizations. He was most proud to be known as a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, where he was active in his Sunday School class and the XYZ senior adult group. He served for years on the board of the Darlington County Independent Housing Corporation and was a supporter and advocate for the Bishopville Manor nursing home. Dick loved to dance, and he loved to laugh. He loved to spend time fishing with family and with friends. He loved life and always encouraged everyone around him to focus on the positive. He kept up with many friends from his youth and made new friends wherever he went. He would say that his greatest wealth was in his friends and his family. Surviving are his sons, Mark Yount and his wife Pat, Greg Yount and his wife Dot, grandchildren Erin Dickinson (Dan), Chris Yount (Sadie), James Yount, Jeff Yount, David Yount, and 3 great-grandchildren, Brenna, Sam, and Brandon. Dick was married to Jo Anne (Lippard) Yount for 59 years until her passing in 2013. He was also predeceased by his son, Brian Richard Yount in 2011.
