Nancy Carolyn Davis Nickles, beloved wife of Dr. Melvin Bond "Bubba" Nickles, Jr., died peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2014. Born in Marion, SC, on August 9, 1934, she was the only child of the late Biscoe and Nan Brown Davis. Mrs. Nickles was to celebrate 57 years of marriage to Dr. Nickles on November 29. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Melvin Bond Nickles, III, and his wife Lynn, of Columbia; her son, William Alexander Nickles, and his wife Mary, of Anderson; and five grandchildren, Jacqueline Blake Nickles and Mary McCallum Nickles, of Anderson; and Sarah Caroline Nickles, Davis Bond Nickles, and William McGirt Nickles, all of Columbia. Known widely for her sweet spirit and cheerful nature, Mrs. Nickles was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren, as well as to cherished cousins and friends. She often hosted gatherings, particularly at "the Barn," on the family farm in Marion County, and enjoyed spending time with her loved ones at the mountains and the beach. With a group of friends affectionately called "the mountain women," she traveled annually to North Carolina. In the South Carolina Lowcountry, she was a member of the Edisto Land Trust and the Friends of Brookgreen Gardens. In Hartsville, Mrs. Nickles was a faithful member of the Women’s Bible Class and an office volunteer at First Presbyterian Church. A master gardener, artist, and avid reader, she was an active member of the Pine and Lake Garden Club and the Thursday Study Club. With the valued assistance of Becky Robinson and Ernest McDonald, Mrs. Nickles kept a beautiful home and garden. Prior to moving to Hartsville in 1964 to establish Dr. Nickles’ medical practice, Mrs. Nickles taught elementary school in Charleston. She attended Converse College and graduated from the University of South Carolina. Funeral services will be held in Hartsville at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, at the First Presbyterian Church, 213 West Home Avenue. The Rev. Dr. Daniel N. Sansbury will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service and a family burial will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Centenary United Methodist Church Cemetery, Marion County.
