Mary Joyce Sullivan, 76, passed away on May 5, 2026. She was born on September 12, 1949, to Ethel and Harry James Mixon, Sr. Mary was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a caring and steady presence in the lives of those who knew her. She had a special love for animals and found comfort and joy in caring for them. She found happiness in simple, meaningful ways. Mary loved to read and watch movies, often enjoying quiet time with the stories she loved. She also spent time in her garden, tending to it with patience and care, taking quiet pride in the beauty she helped grow. Music was an important part of her life. She loved singing in the choir, which brought her joy and a sense of connection. She enjoyed listening to music and dancing, whether with others or simply at home. Those moments reflected a lightness in her spirit that those around her will remember. Mary also loved riding horses, something she had enjoyed since she was a little girl. It was a lifelong passion that brought her a sense of peace and freedom. There was something special about Mary in the way she cared for others. She paid attention, remembered the little things, and showed her love in simple yet meaningful ways. Her presence brought comfort, and she will be missed in the everyday moments of the lives she touched. She is survived by her children, James Sullivan and his wife, Kim Sullivan; Laura Shoemake and her husband, Brian Shoemake; and Robert Sullivan and his wife, Tonda Freeman. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Courtney Ghoens and her husband, Jesse Ghoens, along with their child, Ezra Ghoens; Tyler Freeman and his wife, Ashley Freeman; Conner Freeman and her daughter, Weslynn Howle; and Brandi Sullivan. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Renee Johnson, and her husband, Ron Johnson. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James Hoyt Sullivan; her parents, Ethel Mixon and Harry James Mixon, Sr.; and her brothers, David Mixon and Harry James Mixon, Jr. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at 4 o'clock on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Prospect Methodist Church, with The Rev. Lee Herndon officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family.
