Marion Wright

Marion Humphries Thomas Wright, 83, of Virginia Beach, VA and Hartsville, SC passed away peacefully with her family by her side early Sunday, July 30, 2006 in Virginia Beach at her son’s home. She was born in Hartsville, SC on May 5, 1923 to the late George Hampton and Belle Dunlap Thomas. Marion graduated from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro with a degree in Textile Design. She was married to the late Marion Earl Wright. She was a member of St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church in Hartsville, SC, where she served on the Alter Guild and was a member of the Daughters of the King. Marion was a long-time member of The Thursday Study Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Marion was an accomplished artist and musician. She loved the water, playing bridge and led an active civic and social life. She also loved Kanuga, an Episcopal retreat at which she was a counselor in her youth and found great joy in her later life, eventually becoming a member of the Board of Visitors. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Thomas Goodwin of Hartsville, SC; three sons and a daughter-in-law, William C. Wright, II and George T. Wright of Greenville, SC, James P. and Julie Wright of Virginia Beach, VA; six grandchildren, Elisabeth, Sandy, Liam, James, Daisy and Sean; one great-grandchild, Blake. Visitation will be held at Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home in Hartsville, SC on Tuesday, August 1, 2005 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church, Hartsville, SC at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in the Magnolia Cemetery. A reception for family and friends to celebrate her life will follow the internment in the church Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church, 103 Campus Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550. The family would like to thank all of Marion’s friends for their cards, letters and phone calls during her stay in Virginia and also her “first” daughter-in-law, McGregor Caldwell, for her faithful support and many phone calls to Marion over the past 25 years.
