Ms. Judith Melissa Mixon

It is with deep sorrow that the Mixon family announces the death of Ms. Judith Melissa Mixon, 64. Ms. Mixon entered into rest on Friday, April 28, 2023. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dale McCluney will officiate with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5pm until 7pm on Saturday at the funeral home. Born in Darlington County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Emory Herbert Mixon, Jr. and the late Janice Rhoad Mixon. She retired from Mcbee High School after 30 years of service in the field of education. This goal she achieved placed her on a select pedestal of educators, including her beloved mother, Janice Rhoad Mixon. Between the two of them, they devoted 60+ years of service to McBee High School and the Chesterfield County school district. Alongside her love for education and running a library, Ms. Mixon is remembered for her stellar sense of humor, sharp tongue, and quick wit. She also possessed a fierce love of family (specifically the doating adoration of her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews), of animals (she always had a faithful four-legged companion by her side), of reading (she was constantly reading multiple books at one time), and of the Carolina Gamecocks (she was glad to have left behind a trifecta of bragging rights). She lived her life unapologetically, 100% her, whether you liked it or not. Sassy and sharp zingers were her favorite terms of endearment. She always spoke her mind, and she will always be remembered as the Queen of beach scrabble on the Mixon family beach trip (second only to Grandma Mixon). Surviving are her brothers, Mickey Mixon (Jacquelyn), Donnie Freeman (Renee); nieces and nephews, Mark Mixon (Leilanie), Matthew Mixon (Kristen), Michaela Yi (Caleb), Tori Freeman; great-nieces and great-nephews, Jennavee Mixon, Kellen Mixon, Mackenzie Mixon, Tyler Grace Mixon, and Nakoah Mixon; beloved dog, Lily-Anna Rose, “Rosie.” In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Tyler Rhoad Mixon.
