Funeral services for Jeanette McCroskey Rambo, 84, will be held at 11 AM Saturday, April 14, 2007 at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Ryan Goodroe and the Rev. Tom Rutan will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home. Mrs. Rambo, widow of E.E. “Red” Rambo died at Carolinas Hospital System Wednesday, April 11, 2007 after a prolonged illness. Born in Bristol, TN, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Hancher & Ruby McFadden McCroskey. She graduated from King College, Magna Cum Laude with degrees in science and education. In her early years, she taught in the Virginia Public Schools and became the head of the Biology Department at Virginia Intermont College. She and her husband moved to Hartsville in 1950 and established Rambo’s Shoes. They later established Rambo’s Shoes in Sanford, NC (1956) and Florence, SC (1972). She played an important role in the business through the years as the Chief Financial Officer and in later years becoming the President. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, serving on various women’s groups in the church and as Chairperson of the Tuesday Morning Bible Study Group. She was co-founder of Hartsville Area Council for the Mentally Retarded, was part of the nucleus for the formation for the first kindergarten in Hartsville for handicapped children at First Baptist Church which later became Hartsville Development Center and the Lou Scott Center, now under the Darlington County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. She was appointed by the Governor to serve on the SC Council of Developmental Disabilities Council, served as Chairman of the Darlington County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, as a board member of Whitten Center Parent Council and board member and secretary of the Parent Council of Pee Dee Regional Center, South Carolina Developmental Disabilities and Special Needs. She served two terms as the South Carolina Council Delegate to the National Association of Developmental Disabilities. She was appointed by four different SC Governors to serve on the Darlington County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. For her 81st birthday, the South Carolina House of Representatives and the South Carolina Senate unanimously passed Resolution H. 4256 and Governor Mark Sanford declared July 31, 2003, “Jeanette M. Rambo Day”. She was a charter member of the Turnage Civinette Club, served 4 times as president and was selected “Civinette of the Year” twice. After Civinettes were disbanded she became a Civitan and attended regularly until her health prevented. She is survived by daughters, Carol Ann Godwin and Joy Rambo, both of Hartsville, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Charles E. "Charlie" and Beth Rambo of Florence, SC; grandchildren, Jacob L. Godwin, Steven Stuber, Elizabeth Stuber; niece, Linda Williams. She was predeceased by a sister Faye. The family appreciates the wonderful care given by Dr. Orachun Sitti, the nursing staff at Carolinas Hospital System, Nurses On Call and two of their special caregivers, Sylvia Davis and Crystal Hopkins.
