It is with deep sorrow that the Shumake family announces the death of Mr. Edward Carson "Buddy" Shumake, 80. Mr. Shumake entered into rest on Thursday, February 16, 2023. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. A funeral service to honor his life will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Kelleytown Baptist Church with visitation to follow. Mr. Shumake was preceded in death by his wife, Zelma Anne Shumake; son, Edward Todd Shumake; parents, Lollah Bryant and George Carson Shumake; father-in-law, Floyd Ernest Bell; mother-in-law, Mary Francis Bell; and sister, Shirley Purdue. He is survived by his son, Matthew Brooks Shumake; daughter, Mary Paige Byrd; sister, Patsy Jordan; grandchildren, Elizabeth Thomas (Daniel Jordan), Madison Byrd (Shaina), Nicklaus Shumake (Kaitlyn); great-grandchildren, Lollah Thomas; James Thomas; Carson Mae Thomas; Cal Jordan, Ada Claire Jordan, Joah Byrd, Andie Brooke Byrd, Charlie Ann Byrd, Emersyn Anne Shumake, Elise Gaines, Ricky Gaines; brother-in-law, Ernie Bell; and sister-in-law, Beverly Bell. Buddy grew up in Hartsville, SC and was a beloved member of the community. He worked at Sonoco Products Company for 37 years. He also served on the Board of Directors at SPCU for many years. He retired in 2000 at age 57. Buddy was a member of Kellytown Baptist Church for 52 years where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and upon retiring as the director of Custodial Services. He was a provider and always wanted to ensure that his family was taken care of. He was passionate about his faith, family, and friends, as well as his service to Sonoco and other volunteer activities. Buddy Shumake served his community by coaching Dixie Youth Baseball for the Lions. He coached for 11 years and led one of his teams to the Dixie Youth World Series. He also served as the Dixie Youth Baseball Director for several years. He made a difference in so many young kids lives. He loved and nurtured their passion for baseball and assisted them in becoming good young men. He also served as a member of the Florence Umpires Association as a high school umpire. When not volunteering his time with sports, in the community his passion was golf. He was the Club Champion in his division at Hartsville Country Club and enjoyed playing golf with his friends at Fox Creek Golf Course. He was married to his wife Zelma "Anne" Shumake for 61 years. His love for her was immense.
