Dot Teal Hendrix

Sara Dot Teal Hendrix, 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 26th, 2010. She was born June 16th, 1923, to the late William Archibald and Susanna Hawkins Teal. Dot graduated from Lander College in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at Lander, she was a member of the Glee Club singing soprano and sang at various functions. She also played the piano for the Glee Club. She earned graduate hours from the University of South Carolina. She taught in the public schools system for over 30 years. She was the organist/pianist at Bethlehem United Methodist Church for over 65 years. Dot was also a dedicated choir director for her church and she played the organ or piano for numerous weddings and funerals. She had a touch on the piano that will never be copied or imitated. She was a member of the Darlington County Retired Teachers Association and the Antioch Garden Club. She was devoted to her family and the biggest Clemson Tiger fan around. She immensely enjoyed tailgating at Clemson football games for over 50 years. She wore her Clemson orange proudly. One of the most exciting moments in her life was when she received a phone call from Coach Tommy Bowden while she was in the hospital. She was known affectionately as “Mema.” She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles E. “Jack” Hendrix of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Sara Sue and Ted Purvis, Dee Hendrix Welsh, Rinee and Jim Elgin of Hartsville, June and Nolen Jay Johnson of Bishopville, S.C., sons and daughters-in-law, Charles E. “Bert” and Jane Hendrix, William P. and Teresa Hendrix of Hartsville, SC; and Jimmy and Cherri Hendrix of Fort Mill, S.C.; 12 grandchildren and spouses, Greg and Lea Hickey, Trey and Leslie Smith, Chad Hendrix, Jeff and Joan Hendrix, George and Jamie Kelly, Kyle Hendrix, Beth Hendrix, Jessica Hendrix, Kyria Hoffman, Billy Jack Johnson, Hunter Johnson and Dylan Elgin; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Warren Teal of Southern Pines, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Bernice T. Teal of Hartsville. She was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey S. Teal, a sister, Mary Sue Teal Stackhouse; and a loving son-in-law, Samuel H. “Rip” Welsh Jr. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 28th, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Hartsville, officiated by Reverend Patricia G. Warden. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 27th, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 2236 Bethlehem Road, Hartsville, SC 29550 or to the charity of one’s choice.
