Doris Truett Winburn, widow of Allen Kenneth Winburn, died on December 20, 2023, at her home. Born on July 5, 1929, in Darlington, SC, Doris was the daughter of the late Edward Roston and Eva Knotts Truett. She was the youngest of 6 children and graduated from St. John's High School in Darlington at age 15. She married Kenneth in 1950 and moved to Hartsville. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Hartsville for over 70 years where she served in the children's Sunday School class for many years and on many other church committees. Her mission circle group and Sunday School friends were very dear to her. She proudly helped orchestrate and served on the annual Christmas mission bazaar team and was always so happy with the money raised to give to foreign missions. Doris was faithful to her Lord and Savior throughout her life and set an example to her family. She was sure to have her family in church if the doors were open. Her favorite Bible verse was Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." She also enjoyed her bowling team of which she was a part until 89 years old. She was a volunteer in the Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center's gift shop for more than twenty years. Doris worked as an executive administrative assistant at Sonoco until her retirement. She enjoyed her job and made many close friends. After retirement, she became the personal assistant to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Coker. This grew into a wonderful bond and lasting friendship. They became family to her. Doris enjoyed traveling the United States and the world with her high school friends, Ed and Christine Hursey, Clara Hinds, and Belva Lynn Comba. They created memories and stories about which we all enjoyed hearing and laughing. Surviving are her daughter, Robin Winburn Atkins and her son-in-law George Tomlinson Atkins, Sr. with whom she shared a very special relationship and was loved as her son; and her daughter-in-law, Kim Brown Winburn. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 12 great children who affectionally called her "Mama Doris" and "Grandma." These include: Elizabeth Atkins (Nathan) Cline of Clemmons, NC, Catherine Atkins (Josh) Wofford of Peachtree City, GA, George Tomlinson (Amber) Atkins, Jr. of Greenwood, SC, Steven Allen (Lindsey) Winburn of York, SC, Allen Kenneth "Kenny" (Amberly) Winburn of Hartsville, SC; great-grandchildren, Leah and Lydia Cline, Lucy and Grace Wofford, Eli Atkins, Jackson, Ellie and Lane Winburn, Roger Winburn, Kennedy, Allen, and Juliana Winburn. She was preceded in death by her husband; her two sons, Steven Allen Winburn and Roger Kent Winburn; her grandson, Roger Keith Winburn; her parents; her sister, Iris "Tootsie" Truett; her brothers, Sam W. "Dub" Truett, Lloyd "Pete" Truett, Edwin Murray "Buddy" Truett and Hazel Leroy Truett. The family would like to thank the following ladies for their devotion and loving care they gave to their mother and grandmother for many years: Jeannie Ketter, Verley Nicholson, Lydia Smith, Annie Bell Simon, Dot Hawkins, Pat Harris, Julia Davis, Stacey Lawhon and TY'Arra Canty. A private family graveside service will be held at Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. George Atkins, Jr. and the Rev. Dr. Nathan Cline will officiate. The family will receive friends at the residence, 203 North First Street on Friday, December 22 between 4 pm and 6 pm. Memorials may be made to The Steven A. Winburn Memorial Scholarship at Erskine Advancement Office, Post Office Box 338, Due West, SC 29639. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home and Crematory are caring for the family.
