Mrs. Ann Foster Wise

It is with deep sorrow that the Wise family announces the death of Mrs. Ann Foster Wise, 93. Mrs. Wise entered into rest on Friday, July 5, 2024. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024 in St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church with a private family burial prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024 at a reception in the Parish Hall of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. If Ann blessed you with one of her many quilts, and you plan on attending her funeral service, please feel free to bring the quilt(s) with you to the church. We want to honor her with the works of her hands. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to McLeod Hospice House, 1203 E. Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506. Ann Foster Wise -- daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and daughter of the King -- has entered into her heavenly rest. She was born July 1, 1931, and lived until July 5, just past her 93rd birthday. Ann was born in Detroit, MI to Orpha and Roland Foster. The family later moved to Florida, where she graduated from Deland High School. Ann graduated from Women’s College (UNCG) with her Bachelor of Science degree and later received her Masters in Education from Winthrop University. Her first job as a physical education teacher at Coker College brought her to Hartsville, SC, where she loved teaching her favorite sport, golf! Friends introduced her to John Wise, a chemist who worked at Sonoco, and they married in 1953. Together, they raised three children, built a happy life together, and lived to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. After receiving her Masters degree, Ann became a vocational counselor at Butler High School, Hartsville Junior High, and Hartsville Senior High. She loved teaching and counseling young people and helping them make wise decisions about their careers and education beyond high school. Ann was a strong Christian. She and John were members of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church for years, where she served in many ways: singing in the choir for more than 50 years, teaching Sunday School, serving as President of the ECW, and conducting many prayer workshops in the Diocese and beyond. John and Ann served together on Cursillo, Kairos, and Faith Alive teams; she loved being a part of these life-changing ministries. She completed the first class for Spiritual Directors at Camp Saint Christopher and started several Bible studies in the community. She was most recently a member of St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church. (She loved to say, “I’m the oldest member!”) After retirement, Ann continued to mentor students in several Hartsville area schools. She often said she was happiest when working with young people, sharing her love for learning and her love for the Lord. She loved to sew, creating quilts for many of the babies born at her church, quilts for her family and making hundreds of Eye Spy Quilts for young children. Making these little quilts was a ministry to her, and sharing them brought great joy and purpose to her life. Ann was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Wise; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Wise; and her brother, Gerald A. Foster. Surviving are her children, Diane Wise of Hartsville, SC; John Thomas "Tommy" Wise, Jr. of Johns Island, SC; and Mary Wise McCarley (Burton) of Jacksonville, NC. Ann loved her twelve grandchildren, Shon McCarley (Lindsay), Morgan McCarley (Ivy), Mary Kate Clark (Eric), Elizabeth McCarley, Martha McCarley, Ian McCarley (Abigayle), Anna McCarley, James McCarley (Julia-Page), Caleb McCarley, Patrick McCarley, Chris Lay, and Jordan Lay (Alyssa). Ann’s newest great-grandchild was born two months ago, bringing the total to fourteen. Her surviving siblings include Nancy Foster, Roland Foster (Marian), and Bill Foster and their families.
