    Mrs. Susan Petty McElveen

    November 3, 1960 - May 2, 2021

Mrs. Susan Petty McElveen, 60, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 2, 2021. Susan was born in Hartsville, SC, on November 3, 1960, to Ray and Frances Abrams Petty. She graduated from Hartsville High School in 1979 and received her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Education Specialist degree from The University of South Carolina. She was a dedicated educator and guidance counselor who loved guiding and encouraging middle school students. Her passion was making students feel loved, valued and always making them laugh. She was a treasured friend to many, but most importantly, she was a loving wife, mother to three kind and caring young men, and SuSu to her three grandchildren. SuSu was loved dearly by her nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Susan was “SuSu” to many, not only those related to her. Her contagious laugh, wonderful sense of humor, dance moves, and loving hugs are just a few traits of SuSu that are remembered by those who knew her. Reading and spending time with her grandchildren were her favorite hobbies when she retired after working in the school system for 30+ years. Susan was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jeff and Ruth Abrams, and her father-in-law, Jack McElveen. She is survived by her parents, Ray and Frances Petty; husband, James Ervin McElveen; sons, Jay (Telissa) McElveen, Drew (Blair) McElveen, and Jeff McElveen. Grandchildren; Wyatt McElveen, Asher McElveen, and Raleigh McElveen. Sisters; Amy Petty, Beth (Todd) Tyner, Kerry (Steve) Parker. Mother in law, Anna Laura McElveen. Sister in law, Debbie (Richard) Wynne. Nieces and nephews; Lauren (John) Bowen, Alex (Meagan) Brown, Mary Catherine (Philip) Fulmer, Molly (Matt) Griffin, Emily (Justin) Prewitt, Rebecca (Brad) Barwick, Katie Parker. Relatives and friends of Susan are invited to attend a visitation from noon until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at West Hartsville Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Kevin Walters will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Directors are caring for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Trent Hill Center, 522 West Bobo Newsome Highway, Hartsville, SC.
