Funeral services for Mrs. Maxine Henry "Mickie" Garland, 89, who entered into rest on Thursday, January 25, 2018, will be held at 1 o'clock on Saturday, February 24, 2018, in Wesley United Methodist Church, The Rev. Fran Elrod officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 pm in All Saints Hall following the service. Memorials may be made in her honor to Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 East College Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550, or Gospel Fellowship Association Missions - John Garland Memorial Fund, Missionary, 1809 Wade Hampton Blvd., Suite 110, Greenville, SC 29609. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Mrs. Garland, the widow of Robert Garland, was born in Norwich, NY. She was a daughter of the late Edwin W. Henry and Margaret Herr Henry. Mickie graduated from Norwich High School and attended Albright Art School in Buffalo, NY. She lived in South Carolina almost 70 years and moved to Hartsville in 1962. A joyful and tireless servant, a few years of paid activity as a Head Start teacher and Social Worker, helped with the college education of her two sons. At Wesley United Methodist Church, Mickie taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, served on the Council of Ministries, as well as the Administrative Board. Active visitation of newcomers to Hartsville led to the Maxine Garland Circle. Even with the Food Bank, Meals On Wheels, Kairos Prison Ministry International, Byerly Hospital Auxillary, the Republican Party, Hartsville Civic Chorale, Kalmia Arts; she found time for Scrabble, card games, ping-pong, and her own artwork. She was known as the "Flower Lady" on Richardson Circle and loved gardening for food, flowers, and fun. Mickie was a loving and complimentary wife to Bob Garland, as well as a supportive, yet demanding mother to John and Mike. She loved and was loved. In a 1991 Florence Morning News - Hartsville Bureau article, Maxine H. Garland was quoted, "The root of why I operate the way I do is my love for the Lord." She is survived by her son, Marshall L. "Mike" Garland of Winterville, GA; brother, Charles E. "Chuck" Henry of St. Helena Island (Frogmore), SC; grandchildren, Debra Cruz, Rachel Davino, Krista Hilgeman, Beth Silli, Michael Seth Garland, Margaret Rebecca Garland Rentz; 11 great-grandchildren.
