"Bill" Oldland will officiate, and the family will receive friends in the Narthex immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Bartholomew’s Church in Hartsville, Lutheran World Relief, or classical music stations KUSC or WQXR. Born August 9, 1951, in Stamford, Connecticut; gone to glory September 16, 2021, in Hartsville, South Carolina. Beloved husband of Helen (“Lindy”), brother of Leah and Kiki, father of Andrew (Cari Alice) and Rachel, and grandfather of Andersson and Hans. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen Liptak, and granddaughter Lorelei. Mark was a graduate of Greenwich (CT) High School, Newberry (SC) College, and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and a veteran of the US Navy. He had a nearly 40-year career in law enforcement as an officer in the Greenwich Police Department, deputy with the Richland County (SC) Sheriff’s Department, and retired as a special agent in the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. He knew that his work was service to God in seeking justice to comfort the afflicted. No matter what honors and commendations he received, he remained steadfast in his belief that they were not the important thing; what was important was doing the job set before him to the best of his ability. He took to heart investigator Vernon J. Geberth’s motto, “Remember, we work for God.” He will be remembered for his (sometimes inexplicable) sense of humor, generosity, willingness to serve, a knack for finding the Jason Bourne movies wherever they were airing on TV, strong opinions on classical music, driving skills, boundless technical knowledge, leadership in the church and in his career, and love of his family. Mark appreciated all of the nurses, doctors, and other staff at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center who treated him during his illness. The family would like to extend their thanks to those people as well.
