It is with deep sorrow that Mrs. Cora Belle Hill Byrd announces the death of her beloved husband, Jerry William Byrd, 84. Mr. Byrd passed away peacefully at his home in Society Hill, SC, on Monday, March 7, 2022. A funeral service to honor his life will be held at 4 o'clock on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at Welsh Neck Baptist Church. The Rev. Darryl Davids will officiate with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 121 W. Depot Street, Society Hill, SC, and following the service. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. Jerry William "Pa" Byrd was called home after a short illness at his Society Hill home with his family. Pa lived a long and fruitful life as a resident of Darlington County. He was born on the family farm to Jeter and Ella Mae Hodge Byrd on the Old Camden Road in the Byrdtown Community. He was married to his lifelong love, Cora Belle Hill, for 58 years, about whom he was famous for saying, "Some men find silver, some men find gold, I found Cora Belle!" He worked for years at Klopman Mills before opening his own business in Society Hill. He loved the outdoors, deer hunting, and fishing with family and friends. Jerry served as the president of the Cedar Creek Hunting Club for over 50 years. Pa always looked forward to July 4th family vacations at the beach and his birthday cookouts. He was world-famous for his fried fish and frog legs. Later in life, he looked forward to enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Cora Belle Hill Byrd; sons, Jerry Wayne (Jennifer Flowers) Byrd, Charles Lane (Johnnie Sue Dixon) Byrd; brothers, Allen Byrd, Danny Byrd; sisters, Nancy Byrd, Lola Tice; grandchildren, Luke (Summer) Byrd, Taylor Byrd, Will Byrd, Mary Hunter Byrd; great-grandchildren, Charlie Rae Byrd, Wade Byrd. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jeter Byrd Jr., Lorrain Byrd, Claude Byrd, and his sister, Sherry Amerson.
