It is with deep sorrow that Mrs. Betty Sue Tyner Griggs and the Griggs family announce the death of her beloved husband, Mr. James Robert Griggs, Sr., 94. Mr. Griggs entered into rest on Friday, August 23, 2024, with his family by his side. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. A funeral service to honor his life will be held at 3 o'clock on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Bethlehem Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dan Sullivan officiating, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at Griggs Grocery immediately following the service. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in his honor to Bethlehem Methodist Church. Mr. Griggs was born in Hartsville, SC on October 5, 1929. He was the son of the late Jesse Murray Griggs and Edith G. Griggs. He graduated from Antioch High School. Robert lived a full and blessed life. He began his career measuring land for the ASC office. The most important thing to him after his family was being an avid farmer. Tobacco was his favorite crop. In addition to farming, he was a fertilizer salesman for International Mineral Chemical Company for twenty years and then purchased their satellite operation, The Rainbow Farm Center. He was a hard worker and an excellent businessman. Robert was blessed to have two sons who helped with farming. Bobby farmed with Robert his entire life, and Tim began farming after he retired from Coker College as athletic director. He also was blessed to have a special nephew-in-law, William Hendrix, to farm with them. Robert was also blessed to have a very loving and caring daughter, Faye. She is always thinking of and doing for others, and has played the piano in church all of her life. If there is something she can’t do, she’ll find someone else to get it done. Robert served on the Board of Directors for Darlington County Water & Sewer Authority for many years, along with Farm Bureau and Antioch Young Farmers. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty Sue Tyner Griggs; three children: Bobby (Cindy), Faye (Harold) Johnson, and Tim (Deborah), all of Hartsville, SC. Robert has six grandchildren: Hal (Julie) Johnson, Sharon (Randolph) Griggs, Leigh (Lander) Cason, Jessica (Ben) Teal, Hillary (Bogan) Hall, and granddaughter-in-law, Lorrie Griggs of Mt. Pleasant, SC. In addition, he has twelve great-grandchildren: Chase and Emma Johnson, Reese, Ryann and Jess Griggs, Griggs and Louie Cason, Grayson Griggs and Brody and EmyKate Hall, Harper Griggs, and Henry Teal. Robert has three sisters-in-law, Pat Hawkins, Betty Carol McKinney, and Fran Cross, and two brothers-in-law, Gene Wilkes and Don Wilkes. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 28 years, Doris Wilkes Griggs, and a grandson, James Robert (Bert) Griggs, Ill, as well as a brother, Richard Griggs, and a sister, Josephine Tolson. Robert has many very special friends, the staff of Miriam's Kitchen, Fred Townsend and Paul Hunter, Lynn David, James Dority and Jimmy Gainey, Johnny and Sharon Sturdivant, and so many more. We would like to give a special thank you to Agape Hospice for their dedicated service to our family during our time of need.
