Ruth Phillips McCarley, age 91, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2014, at Morningside Assisted Living in Hartsville, SC. Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late William Eldridge Phillips and the late Annie Mae Bryant Phillips. She was the beloved wife of 59 years to the late Buford Emery McCarley. She retired from Iva Manufacturing in Iva, SC. She was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church. Most recently, she resided at Morningside Assisted Living in Hartsville, SC. She is survived by her four children: Catherine Ann Suarez (Arturo) of Mount Pleasant, SC; Carolyn Lee (Rev. Neil) of Seymour, Tenn.; Burton E. McCarley (Mary) of Hartsville, SC, and Rev. Philip E. McCarley (Rev. Melanie) of Charles Town, WV. She is survived by 16 grandchildren: Habakkuk “Barron” Suarez (Karen), Virginia Street (Benjamin) and Catherine Moore (Dr. Jeffrey); Nathan Lee (Deborah) and Matthew Lee (Kayla); Shon McCarley, Morgan McCarley (Ivy), Mary Kate Rogers (Lee), Elizabeth McCarley, Martha McCarley, Ian McCarley, Anna McCarley, James McCarley, Caleb McCarley and Patrick McCarley; and Hannah McCarley. She is survived by 10 great-grandchildren: Joshua Suarez and Samuel Suarez, Eliana Moore and Reuben Moore, George Northcutt and Caleb Northcutt, Elijah Lee and Madelyn Lee, and Lee Lockwood (Lock) Rogers and Rachel Rogers. Surviving brothers are William Franklin (Frank) Phillips and Archie Leroy Phillips. Also surviving are a number of cherished nephews, nieces, and cousins, as well as faithful friends, neighbors and caregivers. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by eight brothers: Haskell Edward Phillips, Joe Henry Phillips, Walter Glen Phillips, John Dennis Phillips, Sonny Phillips, Robert Phillips, Harold Thomas (Tom) Phillips, and Roy Leon (Doc) Phillips as well as two sisters: Jessie Mae Phillips and Ethel Phillips. A service of worship and thanksgiving for the life of Ruth McCarley will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 16 at Union Baptist Church with the Reverend Mike McMillion and Reverend John Griggs officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials be made to Union Baptist Church, 703 Barnes Station Road, Iva, SC 29655.
