    Mr. Furman Julius Smith

    April 10, 1944 - May 14, 2022

    Funeral services for Mr. Furman Julius Smith, 78, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 2022, at Lakeview Baptist Church. The Rev. Ken Hughes will officiate with burial to follow in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home and Crematory are caring for the family. Mr. Smith entered into rest on Saturday, May 14, 2022. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Charles W. Smith, Sr., and the late Terah Catoe Smith. He was a longtime member of Lakeview Baptist Church. Furman served in the United States Navy and was a member of Hartsville's American Legion Post 53. He retired from Nucor Steel as a Supervisor of Rolling Mill #2, then was an owner/operator truck driver for 10 years until fully retiring. He loved his family and his dog, Bentley. Furman will be remembered as a wonderful and loving husband, father, brother, "Papa" and friend. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Effie Weatherford Smith of Hartsville, SC; daughters, Suzanne Mobley (Dwight) of Florence, SC, Joan Murphy (Chris) of Conway, SC; son, Jason Smith of Kennebunkport, ME; sisters, Sybil Warren (Peyton) of Florence, SC, Dianne Woodham of Hartsville, SC, Vickie Kelly (Skeebo) of Hartsville, SC, Gayle Chaplin (David) of Hartsville, SC, Pam Vereen (Jerry) of Garden City Beach, SC; brothers, Charles Wilson Smith, Jr. (Celeste) of Hartsville, SC, Gregory Smith (Sherry) of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Stephanie McElreath (T.J.), Morgan Murphy, William Smith, Parker Smith, Maddie Smith; longtime friend, Don Atkinson; numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made in his honor to Lakeview Baptist Church, 202 Lakeview Blvd., Hartsville, SC 29550.
