October 13, 1925 - December 18, 2020
Evelyn Saleeby went to be with her Lord on December 18, 2020. She was born on June 13, 1925, in Hartsville, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her mother, Rose Saleeby, and her father, Shady A. Saleeby; sister, Helen Saleeby; brothers, Joseph and Arthur Saleeby. She is survived by her niece, Val Schulz; her great-niece, Karen Schulz; her great-nephew, Bryan, and his wife, Angie; and their children, Peter, Madelyn, and Emma. Evelyn was known for her servant heart and sacrificial love. Her father died at a very young age so she sacrificed going to college to work with her mother in the family store. Upon selling the store, she began teaching piano lessons in her home. Service to God, service to and love of family and friends, and commitment to the community were the driving forces of her life. Her compassion and love for all touched the lives of so many and made her a stranger to no one and a friend to all. Evelyn was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Hartsville until 2010 when she moved to Columbia to live with her niece and then became involved in the work of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. At First Presbyterian Church, her gifts were especially shared through music and working with children. She was a member of the choir for 50 years, taught Sunday School, taught Bible School, led children’s sermons, participated in mission trips, and was active in the Women of the Church programs. At Forest Lake, she continued teaching the younger children and leading them in music. In the community, Evelyn entertained senior citizens in Hartsville, Lydia, Florence, Darlington, and Columbia in communities and churches. She volunteered at HIM conducting interviews. She worked at the Habitat for Humanity Resale Store and worked on teams to build Habitat for Humanity homes. She volunteered at the Food Bank in Hartsville and God's Storehouse in Columbia as well as the Soup Kitchens in both cities. As a member of the Pilot Club, she participated in community projects. Before moving to Columbia, she enjoyed mentoring elementary students. Evelyn left her handprint on the world by living out her faith through actions and service to others with an outpouring of compassion as she treated all with love, respect, and dignity to provide a safe environment for all. A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, in the Magnolia Cemetery, Hartsville, SC. The Rev. Dr. Ellen Fowler Skidmore will officiate, and the service will be available via live stream at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday by visiting the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Facebook page. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Directors are caring for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville S.C. or Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, 6500 North Trenholm Rd., Columbia, S.C. 29206.
