April 1, 1950 - May 16, 2021
Dorothy Hines Quist, 71, a woman of great tenderness and faith, passed on Sunday, May 16th, 2021 at Morrell Nursing Center. Dorothy lived a life in service of others. She was born in Hartsville, South Carolina, on April 1st, 1950. Raised by her mother, Thelma Hines, and uncle, Edward Ruffin, in a tight-knit family Dorothy learned the importance of community. She graduated from Butler High School before attending South Carolina State University. After relocating to Washington D.C., Dorothy completed her undergraduate degree at the University of the District of Columbia. She went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of the Potomac, and a second graduate degree from Strayer University. In the years before her passing, she was in the process of dissertating through an online doctorate program in nonprofit management at the University of Phoenix. She viewed furthering her education as a means of improving the lives of those around her. Her commitment to improving the communities she belonged to is exemplified in the many member and leadership roles she held in her lifetime. Dorothy was a gifted singer and lent her time and talent to the sanctuary choir at the historic Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she regularly attended while living in the D.C. area. Dorothy was a steadfast employee of the Verizon telecommunications company (formerly Bell Atlantic) for more than 40 years. As a software engineer, her collaborations helped prevent widespread international computer software outages during Y2K. She filled her spare time with substitute teaching for Montgomery County Public Schools, and Bible study meetings she’d often host at her home in Gaithersburg, Maryland. After retiring from Verizon, Dorothy returned to her hometown to care for her ailing mother. Dorothy sought opportunities to help as many as she could. She was active in local chapters of the League of Women Voters, Zeta Phi Beta sorority, and the N.A.A.C.P. For many years she worked with the Hartsville Interfaith Ministries food pantry, fundraised for the Butler Heritage Foundation, and served as treasurer at Centenary United Methodist Church. Dorothy’s devotion to family and friends, and the love she warranted in return, will remain unparalleled. Her name and legacy are preserved and carried forward by her son, Donald Quist; an honorary sister in life, Reverend Dr. Betty Walker Collins of St. George, SC; beloved cousins, Ann Pearson, Qiana Thompson, Quion Thompson, Natalie Ruffin, Bernard Dixon, Deborah Dowdy, James Patterson; close family, Jeannette Ruffin, Mary Frances Jones, Tameka Patterson Brown, Veldria Mellette, Chris Ruffin and other members of the Ruffin family; great friends, Joyce Fleming, Carolyn Barber Reid, Jannie Reid, Brenda Prioleau, Debra Edwards, Rev. Frances Stephens Edmonds, and Pecolia Grove; and a former husband, Hammond J. Quist. Dorothy leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends across the globe who will truly miss her. Her love and commitment was a kind of activism enriching the lives of countless souls. The family of the late Dorothy Hines Quist extends their sincere gratitude for the many expressions of Kindness and Sympathy shown to them during this time of bereavement. Monday, May 24, 2021, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in Hartsville, South Carolina, the family will receive friends for a viewing, from 1:00 until 2:00 PM. A memorial service to commemorate the life of Dorothy Quist will follow at 2:00 pm. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Directors are caring for the family.
