March 21, 1936 - May 1, 2022
Betty Pearl Hawkins Johnson, 86, of Hartsville went home to be with her Heavenly Father on May 1, 2022, and is reunited with her beloved husband of 48 years, Joseph Wesley Johnson. She was born March 21, 1936, in Rockingham County to the late JC and Ruby Moore Hawkins. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, Henry and Ray Hawkins; and grandson Mack Rogers. Betty was a devoted homemaker, raising daughters Kay, Ann and Tammy with Joe. Betty relished time with her large family and many friends and enjoyed entertaining in her home. She had a well-deserved reputation as a wonderful cook, and her holiday meals and family parties—and their elaborate dessert spreads—will especially be missed. Betty was not only Joe’s partner in family life, but also worked alongside him to run his business. They also enjoyed traveling for many years, often with good friends. Betty was an active member of Fourth Street Baptist Church for most of her life and continued to find joy in attending for as long as she was able. Betty will be remembered for her discerning taste, sharp wit, and the joy she found in her favorite things: decorating for Christmas, singing along to her favorite hymns and songs, and enjoying a hot dog…or two. She is survived by her daughters, Kay Johnson Coggins of Statesville, NC, Ann Johnson Cokeley (Gary) of Hartsville, and Tammy Johnson of Columbia, SC. Betty was also a wonderful “Mema” and is survived by five grandchildren, Janet Ervin (Seth), Scott Coggins (Erin), Laura Stallings (Thomas), Bianca Obregon, Millie Obregon and Victoria Rogers. She had four great-grandchildren, Jack Ervin, Teddy Ervin, Evie Coggins and Ada Coggins. She is also survived by her dear sister, Vivian Coggins (Kenny) of Spartanburg, SC. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the compassionate caregivers who helped us care for our mother over the last few years. Your love and care will never be forgotten. A funeral service will be held at Fourth Street Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Kenny Lynch and Rev. Randy James officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. A private burial will take place for immediate family only. Please feel free to pay your respects at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home where a memorial book will be available to sign or leave messages for the family. Condolences for the family can also be made at www.bpafuneralhome.com In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Leeza’s Care Connection at www.leezascareconnection.org or the charity of your choice. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home and Crematory are honored to care for the Johnson family.
