A graveside funeral service for Mrs. Bernice Hodges Mills, 96, who entered into rest on Monday, July 6, 2020, will be held at 10 o'clock on Friday, July 10, 2020, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. John Parks will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is caring for the family. Memorials may be made in her honor to Scotland Regional Hospice, 610-B Lauchwood Drive, Laurinburg, NC 28352, or Morton Presbyterian Church, 1068 Morton Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550. Mrs. Mills, the widow of R. Raymond Mills, was a daughter of the late John P. Hodges and Ola Johnson Hodges. She was born in Hartsville, SC on April 10, 1924, and she lived a life that exemplified her faith in Jesus Christ. She was a loving, caring person, who nurtured and doted on her husband and girls. She served faithfully in her church, Morton Presbyterian, in various roles including Sunday School teacher for many years. Whenever there was a death or illness in her church or community, Bernice was there with words of comfort and a hot meal for the family. She was especially known for her fried chicken, green beans, biscuits, Japanese fruitcake, and German chocolate cake. Her favorite hymns were "Trust and Obey" and "Others." These hymns epitomize Bernice's life in that she trusted Jesus Christ and obeyed in freely giving herself to others. Bernice will be sorely missed by her family and friends, but yet, we rejoice that she is with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She is survived by her loving daughters, Annette Mills Traylor (Winston) of Asheville, NC, Janet Mills Sherman (Dickie) of Minturn, SC; grandsons, Stewart E. Sherman (Stacey) of Dillon, SC, Ethan M. Sherman (Amy) of Minturn, SC; great-grandchildren, Keegan, Gabriel, Paige, Avery, Reuben, and Aubrey Grace; loving nieces and nephews, and extended family; special friend of our family, Jackie Harley. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, James B. Hodges, Johnnie W. Hodges, and two infant sisters, Annie Grace, and Beatrice. The family would like to thank the loving nursing staff of Morrison Manor in Laurinburg, NC, for their loving care of Bernice.
