Nica J. Lawhon, 97, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2013. She was born in Hartsville, SC, a daughter of the late John G. and Docia Johnson Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2013 at New Market United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the burial in the church. Memorials may be made to New Market United Methodist Church, 1909 W. Old Camden Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550. Brown-Pennington-Atkins is serving the family. Mrs. Lawhon joined New Market United Methodist Church when she was 10 years old, served on the Administrative Board for over 70 years, taught the Ladies Bible Class, was president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service for 12 years, was a member of the choir and musician for many functions. She was the pianist for the ‘Keenagers’, a member of the Church Seniors Group, 1967-68 Vice-President of the Hartsville District Methodist Women, Memorial Chairperson for New Market Church 1975-76, and Nurture Chairperson for four years. Nica has also served ‘Meals on Wheels’, worked to get Silver Cards for Seniors, was head of the mission for Epworth Children’s Home for years, worked with Harvest Food Bank, volunteer with Alzheimers Respite Program, volunteer with the American Cancer Society, volunteer with the American Heart Association, volunteer with a Grief Support Group, Honorary member of the DAV, and served many other agencies throughout Darlington County. She was instrumental in founding Dance World, which has existed for over 55 years. She enjoyed many years of catering throughout North and South Carolina. Her greatest joy was her family and her love for them. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Judy Lawhon; daughter, Margie Lawhon Watkins; grandchildren (spouses), Ken(Paula) Lawhon, Todd (Stacy) Lawhon, Mica (Monte) Watkins Saxton and Marlo (Scott) Watkins Hughey; nine great grandchildren, Tori, Jake, Taylor and Tyler Lawhon, Sean and Eric Hughey, Monica, Lee and Leland Saxton; niece, JoAnn Atkinson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olin Bert Lawhon; brother, Cornelius Johnson; sister, Amanda Smith; and son-in-law, Marion D. Watkins, Jr.
