Mr. Matthew Emmett Dunn

Matthew (Matt) Dunn, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 8, 2016. He was born in Clarksville, TN, on March 1, 1965. After living in Kentucky and Ohio for several years as a child, he moved to Hartsville, SC with his family. He was the son of Nancy Payne Dunn and the late Martin T. Dunn of Hartsville. Matt graduated from Hartsville High School, where he excelled at football and was a member of the 1981 State Championship Red Fox Football Team. After attending the University of South Carolina, he moved to Aspen, Colorado, where he spent the next 24 years as an electrician/assistant manager at a ski resort complex. While living there, he became an accomplished skier. He also taught rafting lessons in the summers. He was a long-time member of the Aspen Elks Club. In his role as Exalted Ruler, he encouraged the over 700 members to volunteer in various ways in Aspen and the surrounding areas. In an article written by Matt to lodge members, he asked them “to get involved with lodge volunteer opportunities, have fun at the same time, and you might even make a new friend!” Matt returned to Hartsville in 2010, where he touched many lives with his winning personality and enthusiastic approach to a myriad of different projects. Matt had big blue eyes, an infectious smile and an adventurous free-spirited approach to life. One of his many travels was a 6-week jaunt all around the continent of Australia. He loved music, hiking, biking, and all things outdoors. He is survived by his mother Nancy P. Dunn (Randy Britt); his loving sister Marla Stout of Kingsport, TN. In addition, Matt had one nephew Turner Stout of Kingsport, TN. Special friend was Margaret Gettys. Matt left many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, all of whom loved him dearly. He was predeceased by his father Martin T. Dunn and brother Jason M. Dunn. Funeral services will be held at 4 o’clock Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church. Visitation will be immediately after the service in the All Saints Hall until 6 pm. Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church at 145 E. College Ave, Hartsville, SC 29550 or Darlington Humane Society, Box 1655, Hartsville, SC 29551. Brown Pennington Atkins is serving the family.
