Mary Elmore Jordan

Funeral services for Mary Elmore Jordan, 66, who died Thursday, March 6, 2008, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2008 at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society, Box 1655, Hartsville, SC 29551. Christmas Day of 1941 saw the arrival of Mary Keith to parents Alice and Weldon Elmore and sisters, Pat, Nita and Jo, collectively known as “the Elmore Girls.” Mary’s home throughout her childhood and school years was on Patrick Highway, Hartsville. Her roots are strong in the Byrdtown/Antioch communities, as Bethlehem Methodist Church was her family church and she also attended Antioch Elementary School through the sixth grade. Then Mary came to North Hartsville Elementary where she joined Belva (Howle), her next door neighbor. They remained great friends for over 60 years. Mary went to the University of South Carolina and later worked in Virginia at George Mason University where she was the President’s secretary. Living in Japan was a favorite time for Mary and her family.Hartsville once again became home to Mary over ten years ago. She worked in the Corporate Communications Dept. at Sonoco which brought her into a “second strong family.” Mary loved her work and her cohorts and their support for Mary through her bouts with cancer was constant. When we think of Mary, certain descriptions immediately come to mind: petite, smart, ever so pretty, considerate, and hard working. But an outstanding part of her is that cats/kittens knew how to find Mary and their “forever homes.” Her latest additions “Bandit” was a stray rescued at Sonoco and “Patches,” was abandoned at Hardee’s in Bishopville before Mary picked her up. Mary’s and Lynn’s quality of life has been greatly enriched by the unconditional love that their pets have given them. Her love for animals is clearly shown in her request that anyone who might like to make a memorial, please send it to help support The Darlington County Humane Society, so that more animals will be able to live out their lives. Loving attention was given to Mary by her friends and family, as well as the caring staff of the McLeod Hospice House, as she left her earthly home. Surviving are her daughter, Lynn Jordan of Hartsville, SC; sister and brother-in-law, Jo and Bert Tedder of Hartsville, SC. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Pat Wylie and Nita Jeffords
