Mary "Penny" Gay Anthony, widow of Timothy H. Anthony, beloved wife, mother, grandmother "Mimi" and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at the age of 82. Penny was born on November 30, 1942, in Newport News, VA. She is the daughter of the late Richard Treadwell "Dick" Gay and the late Mary Dunn Gay. She attended Warwick High School in VA. She later attended Saint Andrew's College in Laurinburg, NC, where she met the love of her life, Timothy Hopkins Anthony. The two were married on June 13, 1964, in Newport News, VA, and later moved to Hartsville, SC, where they made their home and raised their family. Penny and Tim were blessed with five children, and Penny devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising them. Her love, selflessness, morals, values, guidance, and unwavering faith were the foundation of her family's life. She was a member of Saint Bartholomew's Anglican Church. Her faith and generosity touched everyone who knew her. Penny also enjoyed playing bridge and often hosted bridge parties at her home, where laughter and friendship filled the air. Together with her husband, she helped open the Hartsville Lighting Company, a venture that reflected their shared interest, while Tim continued to run The Hartsville Building Supply. After her children were grown, Penny began a new chapter working for the City of Hartsville at the Hartsville Museum, as the Community Development Coordinator, where she enjoyed sharing her love of local history and fostering community connections. She was also a member of the Hartsville Toastmasters International. Penny had a wonderfully creative and crafty spirit. She loved sharing that spirit with everyone. She loved making jewelry, teaching others how to knit, and creating a treasured family cookbook filled with recipes for everyone to enjoy and continue the Anthony traditions. Her creativity and thoughtfulness brought joy and warmth to all who knew her. Penny will be remembered for her gentle kindness, devotion to God, and how she shared so freely her deep love for her family and friends. Predeceased by her son, Cpl. Todd H. Anthony and her beloved husband of 59 years, Timothy H. Anthony. Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Lawrence K. Anthony, III (Sissy) of Salisbury, NC, Richard G. Anthony (Gina) of Kannapolis, NC, Benjamin H. Anthony, Sr. of Hartsville, SC, and Mary Pendleton Joyce (Joel) of Winston Salem, NC; brother, Rick T. Gay (Jane-Mary) of Hanahan, SC; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a great grand-dog Winston. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the devoted caregivers whose exceptional care and kindness brought comfort and peace. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock on Saturday, October 18, 2025, in The Chapel of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home, with The Rev. Fr. William D. "Bill" Oldland officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private family burial will be held at Magnolia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to St. Bartholomew's ACNA, 107 N. 8th Street, Hartsville, SC 29550.
