Martha Coker Huntley

Dr. Martha Coker Ziegler Huntley, 91, died this morning at her home following a lengthy illness. Funeral Services for Dr. Huntley will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 103 Campus Drive, Hartsville, SC with The Rev. Dr. Michael E. Ridgill, The Rev. Canon Dr. Michael T. Malone, The Rt. Rev. Mark J. Lawrence officiating, internment will be private as directed by Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home. The Family will receive visitors in the Parish Hall of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church following the service. Dr. Martha Coker Ziegler Huntley was born on April 10, 1918, a daughter of the late David Robert Coker and Margaret May Roper. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, The Episcopal Church Women, The Coker College Alumni Association, and The Hartsville Music Study Club. Dr. Huntley provided invaluable assistance in the founding of two scholarships, at Coker College, one in memory of her late husband, Arthur William Ziegler and also one in memory of a very dear friend, Kenneth Lewis Wilmot. She also participated in numerous other charitable ventures. Dr. Huntley received a B.A. Degree in Mathematics, a doctorate of Humane Letters from Coker College and was also a licensed braillist by the National Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Surviving are three sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Jackson and Laura Piere Ziegler of Orlando, FL; Daniel Roper and David Coker Ziegler of Hartsville; three granddaughters, Claire Brannon Ziegler of Orlando, FL; Anne Marie Kerr Holder of Charlotte, NC; Stephanie Lynn Kerr Parrish of Columbia, SC; one grandson, William Arthur Ziegler of Orlando, FL; one sister and brother in law, Dr. Mary Coker Joslin and Mr. William Joslin of Raleigh, NC; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to express its thanks to Mrs. Earnestine B. Wiggins, Miss Shirley A. Myers, Mrs. Bobbi Lucas and Harmony Hospice of Hartsville for their invaluable service. The family also wishes to express its gratitude and appreciation to Dr. T. James Bell, Mr. Edward E. Saleeby, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Kindred D. Williams, Mr. and Mrs. G. James Wilds, III, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Howard Cooper, Mrs. Candace Holcombe and Mr. and Mrs. Donn G. Kerr. Memorials may be made to The Memorial Garden Fund at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, The Music Fund at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church or The Arthur William Ziegler Scholarship Endowment at Coker College. Dr. Huntley was preceded in death by her husbands Arthur William Ziegler, Benjamin Franklin Huntley, III; her sisters Katherine Coker Canon, Hannah Lide Coker, Eleanor Coker Ruthven, Carolyn Coker Huntley and her brothers Samuel Richardson Coker and Robert Richardson Coker.
