Mrs. Lynn Williams Oates

It is with deep sorrow that the Oates family announces the death of their beloved mother, Mrs. Lynn Williams Oates. Mrs. Oates, the widow of Ronald Bentley Oates, Sr., entered into rest on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 11 o'clock on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Mt. Elon Baptist Church. The Rev Rob Brazzell will officiate, with burial to follow in Mt. Elon Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. Memorials may be made in her honor to Mt. Elon Baptist Church, P.O. Box 38, Lydia, SC 29079. Laura Lynn Williams Oates, known throughout her life as Lynn, passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of family, education, faith, and service to others. Lynn was born on January 14, 1935, in Florence, SC, the daughter of the late Chalmers Dean Williams and the late Lucille Odom Williams. She married Ronald Bentley Oates on March 17, 1962, and following their marriage, made her home in Oates, South Carolina, where she raised her family and became a beloved member of the community. She was preceded in death by her husband. Education was one of the great callings of Lynn's life. For more than 35 years, she taught in the Business Department at Coker University in Hartsville, South Carolina, touching the lives of generations of students. Her commitment to teaching did not end with her professional career. A woman of deep and enduring faith, Lynn was a longtime member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church in Lydia, South Carolina, where she taught Sunday School. Her devotion to her church and to sharing her faith remained an active part of her life until the very end. Remarkably, she taught her final Sunday School class on August 23, 2026, at the age of 91. Lynn was the mother of three children: Ronald Bentley Oates II (Brock), Daniel Alan Oates (Wendy), and Kathryn Oates Allison (special friend Bob Mock). She was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: Morgan Brock Harrison, Evelyn Allison Jordan, Ronald Bentley Oates III, Thomas Austin Oates, Lucas Marion Oates, Katelyn Oates Holliday, Hannah Allison Watts, and Matthew Oates Allison. Her family continued to grow through another generation, and she was blessed with great-grandchildren Brock Oates Jordan, Ava Harrison, Kade Oates, Wesley Oates, Emery Oates, Asia Oates, Hollan Oates, Anna Ruth Holliday, Nora Kate Holliday, Whit Holliday, Hayes Holliday, and Noland Watts. She also leaves behind her special friend, Malcolm Woods of Lydia, South Carolina, whose friendship and companionship were an important part of her later years. For more than nine decades, Lynn's life was defined not simply by the years she lived, but by what she did with them. She taught, served, believed, loved, and gave of herself. From the college classroom to the Sunday School classroom, from her community to her home, she devoted much of her life to helping others learn and grow. Her influence lives on in the students she taught, the church family she served, the community she called home, and, most of all, in the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who carry her memory forward. A life spent teaching others is a life whose lessons never truly end.
