It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Mrs. Lula Corrine Hunter Howle, 93. Mrs. Howle, the widow of James Joye Howle, entered into rest with her daughter at her bedside on Friday, June 17, 2022. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. A graveside funeral service to honor her life will be held at 11 o'clock on Monday, June 20, 2022, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery, with The Rev. Dr. John Parks officiating. Following the service, the family will see friends at a reception at 111 Bethlehem Road, Patrick, SC. Due to the current pandemic conditions and those with fragile health conditions, the family respectfully requests that strict social distancing measures be observed and masks are worn where appropriate. Memorials may be made in her honor to the Mt. Olivet Cemetery Association, 1652 Mt. Olivet Church Road, Patrick, SC 29584, or Morton Presbyterian Church, 1068 Morton Circle, Hartsville, SC 29550. Born in Chesterfield County, SC, she was the daughter of the late George W. Hunter, Sr., and the late Margarite Tyner Hunter. Lula was renowned among family and friends for her South Carolina Pee Dee homestyle cooking. Her favorite pastime was gardening, not only flowers but also vegetables for farm-to-table enjoyment. A graduate of Antioch High School, she loved to sing hymns and was raised at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Patrick, SC. She and her husband of 64 years were founding members of Morton Presbyterian Church in Hartsville, SC, each serving as elders. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Surviving are her daughter, Judy (Robert) Chastain, grandson, Clifton J. Howle, great-grandsons, Jackson Howle and Coker Howle, brothers Allen (Lib) Hunter and Paul Hunter, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and in-laws, all dear to her heart. She was predeceased by her father, George W. Hunter, Sr.; mother, Margarite Tyner Hunter; husband, James Joye Howle; son, James R. "Jimmy" Howle, Sr.; grandson, James R. "Richie" Howle, Jr.; sisters, Lucille Hunter Gainey, Lessie Hunter Ogle; brothers, George "Buddy" Hunter, Jr., Rhenn Hunter, and Cullen "Gene" Hunter. The family expresses appreciation to Morrell Nursing Center, Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, wonderful church friends, as well as many caregivers and family members including especially Kay Ewing, Belindia Johnson, Lois Evans, daughter-in-law, Lynn Woodham, and nieces Pamela Ogle, Holly Ogle, and Jeanette Atkinson, for their help through the years.
