Kathryn (Kay) Luther Funkhouser, 88, a resident of Bethesda, Maryland for over 65 years, died on November 16, 2013 at ManorCare Potomac. She was married to Claude Funkhouser, Jr., patent attorney, formally of St. Joseph, Missouri. She served as a media specialist for Montgomery County Maryland Public Schools for over 13 years. Born Kathryn (Kate) Luther in Hartsville, South Carolina on April 5, 1925, she graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Winthrop College at Rock Hill, South Carolina. Later, she graduated with a Masters Degree from the College of Library Science, College Park, University of Maryland. She retired from her service with Montgomery County Public Schools in 1987. Mrs. Funkhouser had work experience at both the Veterans Administration in Columbia, South Carolina and Washington, DC. In addition, she was employed by the Library of Congress, Washington, DC and the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. When her children were young, Mrs. Funkhouser served several times as room mother in their respective classrooms. She also served as a Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a member and a active participant in the Hillmead Garden Club and the Hillmead Citizens Association. She collected for many charities through the years. She was a long time member of the Bethesda Presbyterian Church where she served as Circle Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Stephen Minister. Mrs. Funkhouser is survived by her daughter Claudia F. Everitt and husband Edward F. Everitt; son, Stephen J. Funkhouser; grandson John Patrick Berger and wife Erika Gerhart Berger; and great granddaughters Julia Lauren Berger and Corbyn Alexandra Pingel. In addition she is survived by her sisters Mrs. Robert L. Hudson of Salisbury, North Carolina; and Mrs. William B. Harley of Columbia, South Carolina. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with an interment to follow in Magnolia Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 7611 Clarendon Road, Bethesda, Maryland at a later date. The family suggests expressions of sympathy be in the form of a contribution to the Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 7611 Clarendon Road, Bethesda, Maryland 20814.
