Tributes

Katherine Margaret Kalber Dunlap of Hartsville died at McLeod Hospice House in Florence on August 15, 2013, after a short illness. Mrs. Dunlap, born on April 27, 1923 in Hartsville, was the daughter of Carrie Lee Erwin Kalber and Gustave Adam Kalber of Hartsville. She married James L. Dunlap in 1947, and they lived in Hartsville until her move to the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee in 2005. Mrs. Dunlap was a graduate of Hartsville High School, Coker College, and Duke University, where she was one of the first people to receive a degree in Medical Technology. Before her marriage, she worked briefly at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter. After her children were grown, she renewed her credentials at Florence Darlington Technical College and worked at Byerly Hospital in Hartsville. Mrs. Dunlap was a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the Kenneth Kuehner Sunday School Class in Hartsville. She was a member of the Spring Beauty Garden Club, the Margaret Clyburn Circle, and the Hartsville Heritage Foundation. She was active with Cub Scouts, a Girl Scout Leader, and a member of the regional Girl Scout Council. For many years she taught adults to read through the Each One Teach One program, and she volunteered with the Hartsville Chapter of the American Red Cross and many other civic groups. She was an avid needle worker and quilter, and she loved to fish with her late husband, James. Mrs. Dunlap is survived by one sister, Barbara Kalber Frampton of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three children, Katherine Dunlap, widow of George Bostian, Star NC, James L. Dunlap, Jr. (Pat Edmunds), Six Mile SC, and Gus K. Dunlap (Kathy), Hartsville SC. She has four grandchildren, Gustave Kalber Dunlap, Jr., (Megan), Charleston, Annie Wrede Dunlap, Hartsville, Caroline McInnis Dunlap (Chad Adams), Darlington, Kate Webster Dunlap, Louisville KY; and two great-grandchildren, Samuel Wade Adams and Eliza Jane Monroe Adams, Darlington. A memorial service will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 17 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 16 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the home of Gus and Kathy Dunlap in Hartsville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Kalber Scholarship at Coker College.
