Mrs. Joye Newsome Howard

It is with deep sorrow that Sandy Colston and Jackie Tyner announce the passing of their beloved mother, Mrs. Joye Newsome Howard, 78. Mrs. Howard, the widow of Luther “Bucky” Howard, entered into rest on Friday, August 29, 2025. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home are caring for the family. A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 4 o’clock on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Kelleytown Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. Michael Madaris officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence, 2329 West Old Camden Road, Hartsville, SC. Memorials may be made in her honor to Kelleytown Baptist Church, 2609 Kelleytown Road, Hartsville, SC 29550. Born in Hartsville, South Carolina, Mrs. Howard was one of three children of the late W.A. and Willie Blanche Newsome. A faithful member of Kelleytown Baptist Church, she lived a life rooted in love, prayer, and devotion to her family. She was the best Momma, Mama Joye, and Ma anyone could ever ask for, and she was lovingly known as “Ma” to her coworkers during her many years with CP&L/Progress Energy/Duke Energy. Mrs. Howard was an avid Red Fox and Carolina Gamecock fan, and she treasured time spent with her family and church family. Sundays were especially meaningful, as she joyfully prepared meals to gather her loved ones together around the table. A true prayer warrior, she faithfully lifted up every need she heard of—whether for family, friends, strangers, or her church community. If there was a need, she prayed. She is survived by her daughters, Sandy (Randy) Colston of Hartsville, SC, and Jackie (Toby) Tyner of Cheraw, SC; grandchildren, Michaela (Travis) Stewart of Hartsville, SC, Caroline (Cody) McElveen of Hartsville, SC, Dalton (Emily Wallace) Tyner of Cheraw, SC, Gavin (Kendall Frey) Tyner of Conway, SC, and J.C. (Jessica) Colston of Washington State; great-grandchildren, Ella Grey and Thatcher Stewart of Hartsville, SC, Billy Estep of Patrick, SC, and Paisley Colston of Washington State; sisters-in-law, Patsy Newsome of Seymour, TN, Dale Davis of Hartsville, SC, and Ann Hudson of Hartsville, SC; brother-in-law, Ronnie Howard of Hartsville, SC; along with several nieces, nephews, and her beloved fur-baby, Minnie. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years; her parents; brothers, Tom and John Newsome; sisters-in-law, Doris Newsome, Carole Howard, and Doris Griggs; brother-in-law, Lorraine Davis; and her special fur-baby, Charlie. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, MUSC–Florence Neurology, and MUSC–Charleston Neuroscience ICU for their compassionate care.
