Mr. Joseph Clyde Ross

It is with deep sorrow that the Ross family announces the death of their beloved father, Mr. Joseph Clyde Ross, 76. Mr. Ross entered into rest on Monday, March 4, 2024. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. A graveside funeral service to honor his life will be held at 11 o'clock on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Westview Memorial Park Cemetery, with The Rev. Adam Richardson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Mr. Ross was born on September 19, 1947, in Hartsville, SC. He was the son of the late Edgar Clarence Ross and the late Mary Helen Osborne. He was crew chief and master loader for C130s in the Air Force. When he left the Air Force, he worked for Lockheed in Atlanta. Eventually, he returned home to Florence and started working with Southern Bell, and the many iterations of the phone company, as an engineer. He had a group of friends and coworkers that have lasted a lifetime: Randy Hatchell, Dennis Lein, and Ed Terrio, to name a few. His typical morning routine was waking up for coffee and breakfast at the Venus pancake house with his very own personally dedicated table. He insisted that it become available upon his arrival. He was loved dearly by the Doulaveris, who owned the Venus. Mr. Ross was very proud of his father's service in the Army and specifically, his service and survival from the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Ross was also very proud of his own service and during his tour in Vietnam. Furthermore, he was proud of his own son, Camp, who also served in the Marine Corps and his tour of duty during Iraqi Freedom. Mr. Ross is featured on the Wall of Honor at the Florence Veterans Park. Mr. Ross was a loyal friend, a dedicated employee , and also volunteered his time in various fraternal organizations, promoting charities. He was a Third-Degree Master, a Mason of the Amenity Lodge #340 in Florence, SC, and a Member of the Southern Bell Pioneers. Friends have said that he was very intelligent and meticulous. In his younger days, he enjoyed golf outings. It was also known that if you ever were to ask his opinion, be aware of the answer because he was going to tell you the truth. He enjoyed spending time with friends and laughed often. Both have been invaluable to Camp and his family. He is survived by his son, Wesley "Camp" Ross; daughter, Lea Ross Freeman; sisters, Bunny Perdue and Brenda Cassidy; grandchildren, Kelsey (Adam) Jennings, Avery Freeman, Cade Freeman, Tristan Ross, and Taylor Ross; great-grandchild, Thomas Bramlette III.
