Mr. John Wayne Davis

It is with deep sorrow that the Davis family announces the death of their beloved father, John Wayne Davis, 84. Mr. Davis entered into rest on Thursday, June 30, 2022. The Directors of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home are caring for the family. A funeral service with Military Honors will be held at 2 o'clock on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Bishopville, with burial to follow in Bethlehem Cemetery, 110 Pinchum Sly Road, Bishopville, SC. The Rev. Fred McDaniel and The Rev. Keith Allison will officiate the funeral service. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 pm on Friday, July 1, 2022, at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Saving Sumter Strays, 1230 Winkles Road, Sumter, SC 29153, or at their website, www.savingsumterstrays.com. Mr. Davis was born at home in Bishopville, SC. He was the son of the late John Wallace "J.W." Davis and the late Bobby Elizabeth "Bobby" Ackerman Davis. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a Sonarman. He was a charter member of the Optimist Club, Past President of the Bishopville Country Club, and a Board Member of the American Legion. He was a Master Mason, and a member of the Omar Shrine, where he was a Motorcyclist for the Shriners. He was a past Board Member of the Bishopville Chamber of Commerce. He was an entrepreneur from the beginning and had a strong work ethic. After graduating from high school, he opened Wayne's Drive-In, then entered the United States Navy. After serving in the Navy, he worked as an Auditor for Security Finance and Scott Taylor in Spartanburg, SC. In 1969, he came home to his roots to start Davis Tax Service. He was an accomplished Accountant and Realtor and just finished his 53rd year of tax season. He had a love of dogs, birdwatching, the Carolina Gamecocks, and his family, especially his grandchildren, who knew him as Granddaddy and Pop-Pop. He loved people and was a true gentleman. He always enjoyed telling stories and never met a stranger. He loved old music, especially music you could shag and dance to, playing poker, and watching old movies. He enjoyed attending concerts and was a world traveler. To the Mt. Zion Youth group, he was affectionately known as "PA." He is survived by his two sons, John Wayne "Jay" Davis, Jr. (Julene) of Bishopville; Russell Edwards "Rusty" Davis (Kelly) of Surfside Beach; daughter, Constance Davis Munn (Rhett) of Sumter; stepson, Daniel Lance McInnis (Krysten) of Florence; 7 grandchildren, Christopher Davis (Jeri), Jennifer Davis, Taylor Munn White (Thomas) Elizabeth Munn Krouse (Paul Joseph), Mary Margaret Munn, Will Middleton (Taylor), Claire McInnis, Erika Collins Castera; 2 great-grandchildren, Joy and Ivy Davis. He is also survived by his former spouse and dear friend, Jennie Tolson, and special family friend, Isabelle “Belle” Durant. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dolly Davis McCutchen.
