Mr. Jerry Gilbert

Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Gilbert, 68, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, in Gum Branch Baptist Church with Steven Winburn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home are caring for the family. Jerry passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, November 19, 2023 at his home following a long battle with COPD and MAC disease. Jerry was born in Darlington County, SC on July 5, 1955. He was a son of the late Tom and Elizabeth Gilbert. He graduated from Hartsville High School in 1973. He served in the United States Air Force from 1978 until 1982. He retired from NUCOR steel where he was a dedicated hard-worker. He enjoyed taking care of his yard and pond. He had a heart as big as Texas and would give you the shirt from his back if you needed it. Jerry loved to travel and had been to Rome, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Aruba and many other places. One of his favorite things to do was to get up on his day off and take a spur of the moment trip. He loved NASCAR and spent many Sundays calling his brother, Gene, back and forth discussing the race. Until his health declined, when someone asked Jerry, "How are you feeling?" his response was always, "couldn't be better." After his pain got worse, he would still reply, "someone is worse than me." Jerry or "R" as his brothers called him, was a simple man and lived a quiet life. He is survived by his brothers, Gene Gilbert (Carolyn) of Hartsville, SC, Carol Gilbert (Vickie) of Hartsville, SC; sister, Denise Gordon (Lewis) of Lake Lure, NC; nephews, Adam Gilbert, Tommy Warren; nieces, Erin Gilbert, Donna Ketstling (Peter), Pamela Gallo (Jason); great-nephews, Noah, Jake, and T.J.; great-nieces, Taylor, Ava, and Giada; special little buddies, Gatlin, Gavin, Skye, and Cadence who affectionately called him uncle Jerry and loved him unconditionally. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Lou and William Warren. The family would like to extend gratitude to Dr. A and his staff and also to Crescent Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crescent Hopsice, 696 Medical Park Dr., Hartsville, SC 29550.
