Mrs. Greta Newsom Norwood

It is with deep sorrow that the Norwood family announces the death of their beloved mother and grandmother, Mrs. Greta Gale Newsom Norwood, 88. Mrs. Norwood, the widow of John Alexander Norwood, entered into rest on Saturday, March 25, 2023. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 2 o'clock on Friday, March 31, 2023, at Faith Baptist Church. The Rev. Randy Gulledge and The Rev. Rodney Howard will officiate, with a family burial to follow in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in her honor to Faith Baptist Church, 2316 Faith Road, Hartsville, SC, 29550, or Habitat for Humanity of Hartsville, PO Box 1983, Hartsville, SC 29551-1983. Greta was born in Hartsville, SC, on March 15, 1935. She was the daughter of the late Wade Clifton Newsom and Miriam Moore Newsom. After graduating from Hartsville High School, Greta attended nursing school in Columbia, SC. She began her career at Byerly Hospital, and after a number of years devoted to raising her two children, she went back to work for Dr. Robert Bullard and Dr. Mac Chapman until her retirement. She was a dedicated member of Faith Baptist Church and loved donating her time for numerous church events as well as volunteering at Habitat for Humanity in Hartsville. She was also a faithful volunteer at the Darlington Raceway Ministry for over 30 years. In addition to volunteering, she loved gardening, cooking, fishing, and collecting antiques. She was always ready and willing to create a beautiful flower arrangement or prepare a wonderful meal for any occasion. Her greatest love was spending time with her family, whether it was on vacation, a simple Sunday meal, or one of the many large family holiday celebrations. She adored her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews and loved watching them participate in sports, plays, concerts, graduations, and other events. She is survived by her three siblings; Peggy Gainey Kelly (Ray), Jean Newsom Howard, and Donald Rivers Newsom (Lynn); her son, Jonathan Wade Norwood (Susanne) of Greenville, SC; her seven grandchildren, Dr. Joseph Williamson Powell (Lindsay), Sarah Norwood Teuton, Michael Eugene Teuton, John Hunter Teuton (Jade), Alexandra McLeod Doubles, David Preston Norwood, and Hampton Alexander Norwood; and her seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her infant son, Clifton Alexander Norwood, and her daughter, Johnnie Norwood Doubles.
