Mr. Grady R. Funderburke

Funeral services for Mr. Grady R. Funderburke, Sr., 93, who entered into rest on Sunday, August 11, 2019, will be held at 11 o'clock on Saturday, August 17, 2019, in The Chapel of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice House, 1203 East Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506. Grady was born in Patrick, SC one of eight children born to Pearl A. Boan and Ira Brutus Funderburke Sr. Both parents and all of his siblings preceded him in death. Also preceding him was his first wife, Mary Spooner Funderburke the mother of his children. Grady lived a full and colorful life in his 93 years beginning with his surviving siblings – I.B., Clyde, Pauline Kennedy, Edith Odom, Ray, and Ronnie. Over the years, there have been many stories told about those years…hopefully with some exaggeration. Grady and Mary raised their three children in Wilmington, NC where he worked for M&J Finance Company as a Branch Manager. Summers were spent with a combination of beach days, although he disliked “sitting in the sand” and vacations in the family station wagon. In his later years, Grady lived in Lake View, SC with his second wife, Jean. There were many interesting trips around the country to talk about. Grady never met a golf course he didn’t need to play. Golf was definitely a passion; he passed this love to young golfers as a mentor and tutor while living in Wilmington. Family golf outings were always a favorite for Grady. Grady was also an avid gardener. He planted a garden every year and loved to maintain a beautiful yard. His children remember plum, cherry and pomegranate trees in their childhood home. Grady definitely had a green thumb and was happy to share gardening tips with those less talented. He is survived by his wife, Jean Funderburke of Lake View, SC, sons, Grady Randolph "Randy" (Beth) Funderburke, Jr. of Townville, SC, John W. Funderburke of Wilmington, NC; stepson, Keith (Julie) Fincannon of Lake View, SC; daughter, Jo Ann (Mike Polum) Reeves of Chapel Hill, NC; stepdaughter, Dana (Mike) Hayes of Dillon, SC; grandchildren, Caroline Reeves, Rebekah Reeves, Mercer Reeves, Will Funederburke; stepgrandchildren, Charlie Fincannon, Kenneth Fincannon, Nicholas Fincannon, Michael Hayes, Jackson Hayes, Ethan Hayes; two step-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
