Elizabeth Anne Hunter Shepherd, of Hartsville, South Carolina, died Thursday, February 21, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital, surrounded by her family. Anne was the first child of the late Zedith Wright and Marion Lester Hunter of Bennettsville, South Carolina. Her siblings, Judy and Marion, simply called her “Sister,” by which she was affectionately known by many. Anne attended Winthrop College and was trained as a medical clinician at the Baptist Hospital in Columbia. She worked as a medical technologist at Byerly Hospital and then as a compliance officer at the H. B. Robinson Nuclear Plant, operated by CP&L. After retiring from CP&L, Anne worked as a financial secretary at her home church, St. Bartholomew’s on Campus Drive. There, her service through the Daughters of the King and the friendships that grew were of special significance to Anne. A loving place in her heart was reserved for her two grandsons, Randall and Zachery. To them, she was just “Nana.” She was devoted to her children and much beloved by her entire extended family. Always close were her pets, all of whom were fortunate to have been adopted by Anne. In the quiet times, she loved playing the piano, working on jigsaw puzzles, sewing quilts, and reading mystery novels. Anne is survived by her son, Lee Shepherd of Hartsville, her daughter, Amy S. Barefoot and husband, Stacy, of Hartsville; her sister Judy H. Charles and husband, Winston, of Raleigh; her brother Marion L. Hunter, Jr., and wife, Joy, of Summerville; as well as her grandchildren, J. Randall James, Jr., and Zachery C. James of Hartsville; her niece, Julia W. Charles of Durham; and her nephews, Samuel W. Hunter and wife, Maddy, of Mount Pleasant, and Andrew M. Hunter and wife, Kimberly, of Piedmont, South Carolina. Funeral services for Anne will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Church on Thursday, February 28, at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend William D. Oldland will officiate with the Reverend Dr. Michael E. Ridgill preaching. Following the service and committal in the church’s columbarium, the family will appreciatively receive friends in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, one may make a contribution to St. Bartholomew’s Church or to the Daughters of the King or to MUSC Hospital (Stroke Center) in honor of Elizabeth Anne Hunter Shepherd.
