Mrs Eleanor Onyan Stanley

Eleanor Onyan Stanley, affectionately known as Sally, slipped gently from earth to her Savior’s arms December 4, 2013. Having fought the good fight, she endured with grace and wit to the end in the Lord’s strength, being a beautiful witness of His keeping power through the valley of the shadow of death. Born in New York City in 1918, she lost her Mother, Ethel Barnwell Hoffman, in the flu pandemic of that year as an infant of five months. Her Father, Oliver Esler Onyan, was a New York City fireman with Engine 71 South Bronx and he passed when she was twelve. The love of the Eugene Samsons, who raised her and that of her extended family gave her the priceless gift of being treasured. Her maternal aunt, Elsie, and husband, Fred Atkinson, provided for her to come to Hartsville to attend Coker College and she graduated in 1940 with a degree in chemistry. Marriage followed soon after to William T. Stanley, originally from Darlington, and together they began their journey which would last two months short of fifty years. Anyone who knew them well knew the humor that was such a bond in that home as was the devotion to family. Sally made a lasting difference as an eight grade science teacher at the Hartsville Junior High School for twenty years. She was the beloved mother of the Prestwood gang. She was loved and respected as being tough but fair! Sally was predeceased by her dear husband Bill, son Bill and wife Ruth, half brother, Bill Sommer, granddaughter Ashley E. Stanley, and great-grandson Derek Anderson. She is survived by son, Oliver (Stephanie), grandchildren Debbie S. Puckett, Carmen (Chuck) Dykes, Jean Marie (David) Buckelew, Christy (Brad) Fitts, Catherine (Rob) Shaw, Oliver (Jonie) Stanley, Jr., and nine great grandchildren. She made sure that her family and friends knew how much she cared for them. The family is grateful beyond words for the attentive and compassionate care of Drs. Susan Reynolds, Vipul Shah, and Marina Androssova, the staffs of Carolina Pines RMC, Morningside, Oakhaven, McLeod Health and McLeod Hospice House.
