Funeral services for Charles Nevin Betts, 89, will be held at 2 p.m, Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. Father Michael Ridgill will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall and the burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Mr. Betts died Saturday, June 5, 2010. Born in Columbia, SC, he was a son of the late Ellen Dendy and Erskine Moore Betts. He attended McMaster, Wardlaw and Columbia High Schools and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1942. Following a short period at The Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, WS, he completed 3 ½ years service in the U.S. Navy. He then did 1 ½ years of graduate studies in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin. Starting in 1948, he enjoyed 38 years of service with Sonoco Products Company, retiring as Director of Environmental Activities. While with Sonoco, he served on the Operations Committee of the National Council of the Paper Industry for Air and Stream Improvement, and as chairman of the Technical Committee of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry, was past Junior Warden, and was Lay Reader and choir member for many years. He was past President of the former Exchange Club, the Kiwanis Club and the Hartsville Cotillion Club. He served on the boards of the South Carolina Wildlife Federation and Kalmia Gardens of Coker College, and the Board of Visitors of Coker College. Mr. Betts later moved to Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community fulfilling the plans made earlier with his beloved wife, Dorothy Derrick Betts, who predeceased him in 2003. Mr. Betts was predeceased by his brothers, Erskine D. Betts and Lowry Matthews Betts. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Rowena D. Betts of W. Columbia, SC; her daughters, Ellen E. Betts and Mary B. Long, both of W. Columbia, SC, Rowena B. (Russell) Brockman of Fletcher, NC; sister-in-law Doris W. Betts of Pittsboro, NC; her sons, David(Catherine) Betts of Pittsboro, NC, Erskine (Mary) Betts of Apex, NC; her daughter, Lewellyn B. (Tom) Mroz of Chapel Hill, NC; brother, Robert Moore Betts of St. Louis, MO; his daughter, Katherine Betts; goddaughter, Susan Yoe of Huntingtown, MD.
