Funeral services for Charles Hugh Campbell, Jr., 80, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008 at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 2, 2008 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the residence, 912 Sweet Bay Road, Hartsville, SC. Mr. Campbell died Saturday, June 28, 2008. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Charles Hugh and Ruth Schaeffer Campbell, Sr. He was a graduate of The University of the South, Sewanee and a member of Kappa Alpha Order, Alpha Alpha Chapter. After graduation, he began his career with Sonoco as the secretary to the Vice President, his father, Charles Hugh “Charlie” Campbell, Sr. During his tenure he became active in the City of Hartsville, serving on various commissions and boards: The City of Hartsville Building Commission, the City of Hartsville Design-Review Board, and the City of Hartsville Parking & Beautification Commission. He was a downtown property owner, member of the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce, and the Florence Darlington Technical College Board. He retired from Sonoco after 35 years as the National Director of Sales. Upon his retirement he owned and managed the local cable company and the local radio station, WHSC. For many years he hosted a talk radio show at WHSC, and was an active member in both the cable and radio associations. Hugh served as Vice President of the Hartsville Exchange club in 1965 when the club became the Hartsville Kiwanis Club. He was an active member of the Hartsville Kiwanis Club and served as president from 1965-1966 and Lt. Governor from 1972- 1973. He was a member of the Second Thursday Club. Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Georgia Johnson Campbell of Hartsville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie Campbell and Robert E. Lee of Eugene. OR; stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Sandra L. McGuire of Hartsville, SC, Deborah S. and William G. Dorsey of Statesville, NC, Linda K. and Gregg A. Thurston of Paradise Valley, AZ; sister, Betty C. Wiggins, Hartsville, SC; grandchildren and spouses, Debra Lynne Stodghill of Gloucester Point, VA, Leesa A. and Steven R. Mansen of Arlington, TX, Jacqueline A. Kariofilis of New Port Richey, FL, Jennifer L. Estep of Hartsville, SC, Melissa M. and Jeffrey R. Purdin of Allen, TX, Kathy M. Birkhofer of Columbia, MO, Kimberly R. Rua of Denver, CO, Kevin A. Rua of Fort Worth, TX, Cynthia L. Thurston of Englewood, CO, Alan J. Thurston of Paradise Valley, AZ, Amanda K. Thurston of Paradise Valley, AZ.
