Betty Wiggins

Elizabeth McArn Campbell Wiggins died on December 30, 2010, after a long and valiant struggle. Betty lived life to the fullest and to the best of her multiple talents and abilities. She was a true steward of God's gifts, devoted wife and mother, incomparable friend and uncompromising champion of the many causes she adopted. Private family services will be held on Saturday, January 8th, 2011. The family will receive friends Friday, January 7, 2011 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at her residence, 127 East Home Avenue, Hartsville, SC. Memorials may be made to Trees for Tomorrow, P.O. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the Wiggins Family. A lifetime resident of Hartsville, Betty was born here on May 3, 1924 to the late Charles H. and Ruth Shaeffer Campbell. She attended the public schools of Hartsville and Agnes Scott College. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Joseph Lawton Wiggins, whom she married on June 4, 1948; and her only dearly loved sibling, the late Charles Hugh Campbell, Jr. Betty was an original among environmentalists, she and Joe embracing the beauty and wonders of nature and pursuing its protection. She cultivated that appreciation of nature by encouraging others to enjoy her love of fishing, swimming, hiking, skiing, and learning to identify and protect any endangered species. To that end, she helped organize The Mountain Women who for many years enjoyed these activities together. Included among the many charities and organizations she supported were Trees for Tomorrow, Coker College, Kalmia Gardens, Black Creek Land Trust, Hartsville Community Concerts, Spoleto Festival, Hartsville Interfaith Ministries, Spring Beauty Garden Club, SCETV, Hartsville Memorial Library, and the Hartsville Museum. She was a faithful member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. She is survived by her beloved son, Joseph Lawton Wiggins, Jr. and his wife Donna of Hartsville; a granddaughter Allison Blair Hill of Hartsville; sisters-in-law Georgia Campbell of Parker, TX and Belle Wiggins of New York, NY; niece Melanie Campbell Lee and her husband Robert of Eugene, OR; nephews Douglas Lee Bush of Hartsville, David Michael Bush and his wife Ashley of Atlanta, GA, John L. Belding of Venice, FL; and loyal companion Mamie Mae Gibson of Hartsville.
