Obituary:
Funeral services for James Calhoun “Jay” Hill, 83, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2005 at First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge. The Rev. Billy Campbell will officiate with burial in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 5, 2005 from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Box 1430, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301. Mr. Hill died Thursday, March 3, 2005. Born in Chesterfield Co., SC, he was a son of the late Ransom James and Lillian Gilbert Hill. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Pine Ridge, the American Legion Post #53, and the 40 & 8. He was a graduate of McBee High School and was retired from Sears Roebuck & Co. Jay served in the 36th Infantry Division (Texas Outfit) during WWII where he was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was captured by the Germans during the Battle of Selerno, Italy and was a P.O.W. for the remainder of the war. Jay was an avid gardener and history buff with an interest in the Civil War and WWII. In 2002 he published his war memoirs, Mother Pray For Your Son (Infinity Publishing). Surviving are his wife, Marceil Hill of McBee, SC; daughters and son-in-law, Joyce Grubb of Charlotte, NC, Sandra and Alan Morgan of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren and spouse, Jason and Candice Grubb of Charlotte, NC, Christopher Grubb of Charlotte, NC; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Myrtle Roscoe and Ruby Coates.
