Mr. Ray Davis

Funeral services for Emmett Ray Davis will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will be at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 29 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the L.D.S. Missionary Fund, 50 N. Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84150 or the American Diabetic Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 311, Columbia, SC 29204. Ray, 86, peacefully passed away on June 27, 2015. Born on July 8, 1928 in Chesterfield, SC, he was a son of the late Edward Walker and Nettie Brown Davis. He married Virginia Edwards on January 22, 1949 in Vallejo, CA while serving in the Navy. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in June of 1969. He is survived by his wife; daughters: Glenda Crowley, Hartsville; Brenda (Wayne) Daniels, Indian Trail, NC; Sandy (Dennis) Tenney, Sandy UT; and Ginger (Freddie) Freeman, Hartsville. Grandchildren: DeWayne Morris, Brian Morris, Nicole Jenkins, Brandi Morris, Steve Snipes, Rodney Daniels, Jennifer Thompson, Michael Tenney, Matthew Tenney, Ryan Tenney, Amanda Graf, Phinon Woodside, Garrit Hawk; 32 great-grandchildren and numerous extended family. He was preceded in death by his brothers Maxie Davis and Junior Davis. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent four years in the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. McCaffery in the mid-1940’s. He was proud of his military service and loved telling about his time on the ship and the ports he visited. One of the highlights of his life was participating in the “Honor Flight” to Washington, D.C. in 2012 for WWII Veterans. Among other jobs that he held, he was a fireman with the Hartsville Fire Department and maintained his association with them for the remainder of his life. He was also affiliated with the DAV, The American Legion and the Hartsville Masonic Lodge # 173. He was a jack-of-all-trades and there were few things that he could not repair. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, sitting under his carport, and cooking for the firemen at their meetings. In the summertime he was well known for churning homemade ice cream - your only choices were pineapple or banana. He deeply loved his family and enjoyed the time he spent with them. We will miss him greatly, but take comfort in the assurance of the eternal nature of the family unit. The family would like to express their appreciation to Morrell Rehabilitation staff for taking such good care of him during the various times he was there over the last several years.
